Coca-Cola Semi Parking Facility - Paw Paw, MI

Project Focus
In the summer of 2005, IHC constructed a 22,200 square yard, 8” PCCP parking lot for semi-trailer storage at Coca-Cola’s Minute Maid facility in Paw Paw Michigan. This facility serves heavy distribution traffic, approximately 200 to 300 trucks per day. The concrete was placed on a quality 12” aggregate base constructed to Michigan DOT standards. The Design Engineer for the project was Driesenga & Associates of Kalamazoo.

Project Details
Schedule & Complexity
The Owner constructed the project in two phases allowing for other construction activities and for intermediate beneficial use. The Prime Contractor, Lounsbury Excavating of Paw Paw, subcontracted the fine-grading and PCCP to IHC.
The Owner’s representative, prime contractor and IHC attended pre-construction meeting to discuss critical issues and to plan execution and coordination. Routine follow-up meetings were held, and the project was delivered on time.

Construction & Innovation
IHC placed the concrete utilizing a Gomaco Commander III slipform paving machine, constructing in 20’ widths while extruding keyway on each longitudinal joint to provide load transfer. Intermediate saw cuts were made to provide for 10’x10’ panels proven to provide excellent performance. All joints were sawed, and sealed with hot-pour rubber asphalt.

Quality
Quality concrete meeting the project specification of 4000 psi was produced by Consumers’ Concrete, delivered in paving transit mixers to the IHC slipform paving operations. The concrete included monofilament fibrous reinforcement. The Owner provided QC testing. Care was taken to straight edge all surfaces to assure that the relatively flat grade transverse surface drained to the edge without ponding at joints.
